Andrea is on a mission to write plays about Gen-Z. How have our desires for relationships and sex been warped by COVID-19? How do we actually build meaningful community and friendship when our phones make us feel like we are always at a meaningless fingertip away?
Andrea experiments with poetry and magic realism to create stories that blend reality and imagination into one. Most of all, she seeks to write the plays she wishes she had growing up. Where young women talk about sexual desire unashamedly. Where characteres are allowed to get messy and really freaking weird. Stories that make you feel like your skin is on fire.
"Andrea possesses a deeply powerful creativity, a tireless work ethic, and an entirely unique narrative voice." - Djanet Sears
HIJA DE MAÍZ
You are only animal, you are only flesh and bone.
One-act play. Short-listed for the 2027 Ellen Stuart Ross Award at Tarragon Theatre.
Marty is dreading her quinceañera. Her mortal enemy, Julia, is on the guest list, her mom is making her a weird dress, and no matter how hard she tries, she can’t get her slime business to go viral. The hottest guy in her class won’t even add her back on Snapchat, and Marty’s resigned that she’s destined to be a virgin forever. All seems lost, until a powerful spirit emerges from a bottle of Jarritos and transforms Marty into HIJA DE MAÍZ. Through fantastical episodes (and painfully awkward teenage bullshit), Marty channels the jaguar slaying powers of her Mayan ancestors to vanquish foes and survive her fifteenth birthday… tal ves.
Coming of age while you watch the world fall apart on Instagram Reels, feeling like a sexual “late bloomer”, and cultural identity (when really you grew up in the suburbs) merge in this raunchy epic.
KAPPA KAPPA KAPPA
SPIT, PINK WHITNEY, GLITTER... SISTERHOOD.
Full-length drama. Developed and workshopped in Djanet Sears' Advanced Playwriting Class at the University of Toronto.
Being a Kappa Kappa sister is so totally awesome, from getting black out on Friday nights to literal eternal sisterhood. Through high-energy choral whirlwinds, confessional monologues, and intimate scenes, we follow as first-year Lila is swept up in Sorority Rush week as she navigates the spiky social scenes of parties, sleepovers, and initiation rituals. As the trials to become a Kappa Kappa girl escalate in cruelty, she makes an unlikely ally who could change the course of both their futures at the sorority.
KAPPA KAPPA KAPPA is an unapologetic exploration of the glimmer and gloom of party culture, friendships, and sexuality. Greek Life becomes a sounding board to ask bigger questions about the discovery of pleasure, objectification of women, and the ferocious and comforting intensity of female friendships.
FRANKIE
Organs of a sex worker, the feet of a child, hands of a french woman.
10-minute play. Developed in Beatriz Pizano’s Mainstage Class at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Vic is bored... being a mortician is not easy. Death is tiring, the crematorium smells weird. and she really didn’t think life would turn out this way. She often feels she would be much better if she were just… someone else entirely. Her solution? To make something of her own. Something perfect. Her creation, Frankie, is everything that she is not.
This loose adaptation of Frankenstein walks the audience through creating the perfect woman - each of the body parts stolen from different bodies in the morgue. The line between creator and creation blurs, as the search for perfection warps into the dizzying and confusing feelings of a first queer love. The grotesque and the pleasurable merge as this piece explores the pressures of fitting into the molds of womanhood, and how queerness can feel like an antidote.
